WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 31, 2007 – OPENING CEREMONY
Sorbonne University's Grand Amphitheatre, followed by a welcome cocktail at the Paris Court of Justice (Harlay Hall)
 / 5:45 Pm - 10:00 Pm
The Sorbonne owes its name to its founder, Robert de Sorbon, chaplain and confessor to the King of France, Saint Louis. Its history, over the centuries, has been so closely linked to that of the University of Paris that that it has become a symbol for the latter.
The University came into being in the 13th century, with the organisation of Paris’ teachers and students into a corporation. Originally established in the Ile de la Cité, in the 12th century, they moved to the future "Latin Quarter" where theology, law, medicine and the arts were taught to young people from the four 4 nations (French, Picardian, Normandian and English), thereby conferring it international prestige, from its very inception.
Rebuilt by Richelieu in the 17th century, closed down by the Revolution in 1791, turned into an artists’ workshop in 1801, the Sorbonne was once again given over to education in 1821.
At the end of the 19th century, the Republic rebuilt it in turn, making the New Sorbonne an intellectual sanctuary – a privileged space for the acquisition of knowledge. A rallying point during the May 1968 protests, the University has since been reorganised into autonomous universities, but the Sorbonne – the French university’s symbol – still remains and always will remain a magical structure, a magnet for the youth and for talent.
The ceremony will be followed by a performance by the Republican Guard.
The opening ceremony will take place in the Grand Amphitheatre.
Access will be from 45-47, rue des Écoles.

After the opening ceremony, a welcome cocktail will be offered by the Paris Bar at the Paris Court of Justice. The timings will be given when you register and will be displayed in all the congress hotels. The return journey to the hotels will be by taxi.
